Football.
My favourite sport is football and I follow two teams in particular, I wonder if you can guess which?
For our American friends we are talking about football the sport with eleven players in each team, where you use your feet, hence the name, to control
the ball. Not your hands as in American football, which should really be called handball, or a soft version of rugby.
Anyway the first team that I support is of course Blackpool otherwise known as the Tangerines due to the beautiful colour of their kit.
Blackpool have been recognised as a football club since 1887, when a dispute amongst players of the Blackpool St Johns team, resulted in the formation of Blackpool FC.
In 1888 the club were the founder members of the Lancashire League, winning the championship in 1893-94 after narrowly missing out the previous season to Liverpool.
Blackpool FC joined the Football League in dvision 2 in 1896 and apart from dropping out of league in 1899, for one season, have maintained their
league staus ever since.
Contrary to popular belief, I have never actually played for Blackpool FC, I'm just posing in the old kit.
Blackpool FC honours;
- Division 1 runners-up 1955-56
- Division 2 champions 1929-30
- runners-up 1936-37, 1969-70
- Division 4 runners-up 1984-85
- Division Three Play-Off Winners 2000-2001
- FA CupWinners 1953
- runners-up 1948, 1951
- Anglo-Italian Cup winners 1971
- runners-up 1972
- LDV Vans Trophy Winners 2002
The second team that I follow is Holland, they also sport a very nice orange coloured kit.
Holland play in Orange as the original colours of the Dutch flag were Blue white and Orange.
The orange section of the flag is a reference to the house of Orange whose decendents (my ancestors) are still monarchs in Holland today.
During the 1970s, the team was famous for its mastery of Total Football and was nicknamed "Clockwork Orange" for its precision passing.
They have also been known as Oranje, Orange Crush and The Orangemen.
Holland team honours;
- World Cup Runner-Up: 1974, 1978
- UEFA Euro – European Championships Record
- 1976 : third place
- 1980 : Round 1
- 1988 : winner
- 1992 : semi-finals
- 1996 : quarter-finals
- 2000 : semi-finals
- 2004 : semi-finals
